September: Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper

shark finJoin us in September! We’re reading Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper: A Sweet-Sour Memoir of Eating in China by British food writer Fuchsia Dunlop. This book won the 2009 IACP Jane Grigson Award, and was nominated for a James Beard award. Updated: We’ll meet Tuesday, September 15, at 6:00pm, at Mr. Chen’s in Hoover, 1917 Hoover Court, just off Highway 31. (Here are Chowhound reviews.) If you will, please, RSVP through Facebook or leave a comment here so we can reserve ourselves a spot for the approximate number of people.  Location, right now, is TBD: If you’ve got a favorite Chinese restaurant to suggest for our meeting, leave a comment or send a Facebook message to Shaun.

(Shaun is fantasizing about finding a fabulous Sichuanese home cook to teach us how to make authentic hot pot dishes and such… but, sigh! We are in Alabama.)

Remember, buy your book from Alabama Booksmith, mention you’re with the Foodie Book Club, and you’ll get a discount.

One other note: We’re already starting to look forward to 2010. Our friend Jake at Alabama Booksmith likes clubs to supply him with a list of titles for the entire year early, so he can promote the books and the clubs (and in return, we get great discounts). We’re also talking about taking a food-related trip or two, more potlucks, and another movie night. If you’ve seen anything you’d like to read next year, or have any other suggestions, send a message or post a comment.
