July: What We Eat When We Eat Alone

What do you eat when no one’s looking? Do you grab a spoon and a jar of incredible chocolate hazelnut spread? (I would never, ever, ever do that…) Pasta with a mound of Parmesan? A bowl of cereal for dinner… or an omelet and a glass of wine? The perfect grilled cheese sandwich with a side of tomato soup? Maybe more than a few slices of Benton’s bacon?

For our July selection, we’re reading something light: What We Eat When We Eat Alone, a book by Deborah Madison (she’s the California cook, writer, teacher, and culinary consultant who brought the world Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone) with sketches by her husband, Patrick McFarlin. The book started when Patrick began asking people what they eat when they’re alone to break the ice with new friendships. The answers are always revealing. Sometimes funny, sometimes strange, and often something we can relate to.

    I eat Miso paste straight from the jar also homemade smoked pork skins with the skin on.
