January 2011: Punch

Punch: The Delights (and Dangers) of the Flowing BowlRing in the New Year with a little bit of history about the season’s favorite concoctions. We’re reading Punch: The Delights (and Dangers) of the Flowing Bowl by David Wondrich, a cocktail expert and spirits writer for Esquire and Saveur, and a co-founder of the Museum of the American Cocktail. Wondrich won a James Beard Award for Imbibe! From Absinthe Cocktail to Whiskey Smash, A Salute in Stories and Drinks (our January 2008 selection). Like Imbibe!, Punch includes historical recipes—some, perhaps not so practical for replicating (got a supply of sperm whale vomit?) and some with much tastier ingredients that we’ll have to try ourselves. Don’t retire your designated driver just yet—and join us on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 January 11, 2011, 6pm, at LivonFifth in Birmingham. [Update: We’re postponing this meeting until January 18th because of weather-related road conditions.]
