This month we’re reading Cherries in Winter: My Family’s Recipe for Hope in Hard Times by Suzan Colón, a writer and editor who lost her dream job at a national magazine during the recession of 2008. On a tight budget, she started to cook at home, and turned to family recipes that gave her much more than dollar-stretching meals. This book is her memoir of learning to live through hard times, with recipes (some of them, funny just because they’re so real—such as “attempted split pea soup”).
Come ready for a potluck: Bring a dish based on a family recipe you love. And come ready to share stories, too—it’s a safe bet that you can’t help but be inspired to do so. We’ll meet on Tuesday, February 8, at 6pm, at LivonFifth, 2201 5th Avenue South in Birmingham (the green building next to Workplay).
