This year, we’re reading two books filled with the incredible spices, flavors, and traditions of India. The first is our April selection—Monsoon Diary: A Memoir with Recipes by Shoba Narayan. A journalist who has written for The Wall Street Journal, Food & Wine, Saveur, and The New York Times, she won a James Beard Award for “The God of Small Feasts,” an article published by Gourmet in 2000. In Monsoon Diary, we’ll read how food is a focal point of life, identity, and culture for Narayan and her family—so much so, she had to successfully cook a feast for her family in India in order to convince them that she should be allowed to go to college in the United States.
